Lake Tahoe is best known for its world class ski resorts. In the immediate area there are 12 quality resorts, with all these choices there is something for everybody!
Between Tahoe city and Truckee there is the legendary Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 winter Olympics and terrain and parks for all levels. Squaw Valley recently purchased Alpine Meadows, a smaller and more down to earth ski resort just down the road, making the Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows the largest ski resort in the nation. Passes at one mountain are valid at the other. Also near Tahoe city, on the west shore is Homewood with its great lake views and tree skiing. Coming down the main run it literally looks like you are going to ski into the lake. Homewood is a little off of the beaten path and doesn't seem to get the crowds common at the other resorts.
Truckee also has Sugarbowl, Northstar, Boreal, and Donner Ski Ranch all within a fifteen minutes of driving. Sugarbowl gets the heaviest snow load of any mountain in the North Lake Tahoe area. It is a great mountain and has terrain for all levels of riders. It is also the closet mountain to Sacramento and the Bay Area making it a favorite for people who don't live in the area. Northstar, like Heavenly was recently purchased by Vail, It has a great village with both the Hyatt and Ritz Carlton, and offers groomed runs and park skiing for the whole family. They used to be partnered up with Sierra at Tahoe and both have done a great job at making themselves "fun" mountains. Lack of challenging terrain is augmented by world class parks. Shaun White recently signed on to make this his home mountain and he will have a world class super pipe constructed to his specifications next year. Boreal and Donner Ski Ranch have rebranded themselves as "park mountains." They are both small mountains that are almost entirely all park. Boreal keeps their mountain open at night for those who enjoy playing in the park at night. Grab your Ski's, snowboard, or snowskate and jib the night away.
North shore areas of Crystal Bay, Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, and Carnelian Bay are close to Northstar and the Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows resorts, but also have access to the Incline Village's Diamond peak and Mount Rose. Located right in incline village Diamond peak is a smaller quaint ski resort that offers a relief from the crowds at the larger mountains. Mount Rose is the closest mountain to Reno and has a very high base, making it a great alternative when those warm storms come around. It has terrain for all levels of riders.
In South Lake Tahoe there is Heavenly, Sierra at Tahoe, and Kirkwood. Located right at Stateline with a gondola coming out of the Heavenly Village is Heavenly. This mountain offers incredible views of the lake and has enough terrain that there is something for everybody. Vail recently purchased Heavenly and you can expect the same quality of service that they offer at their other resorts. Sierra at Tahoe has great parks, tree skiing, and a family atmosphere. It is a well groomed and managed mountain, the only thing is lacks is very challenging terrain. If you want double black diamonds, steep runs, and cliff drops, Kirkwood offers some of the best terrain around. The locals are very privy to Kirkwood since it gets the most snow of any mountain in the area, and there are tons of hidden little gems. In South Lake Tahoe this is the local's mountain because it is just a little bit farther away from the major cities and offers the most challenging terrain. Just don't expect every run to be groomed.
